Media Statement by Chiew Chin Sing,
State Assemblyman for Kidurong, Sarawak, Sarawak DAP Deputy Chairman and DAP
Bintulu Branch Chairman on the 9th of June 2012.
State Assemblyman for Kidurong Chiew
Chin Sing said that the government ought to
assist all businesses and industries, and especially the small and
medium ones, when implementing the
minimum wage law so as to ensure that they will not face unnecessary losses and
troubles. This is to ensure win win for both the employer and the employee.
With the implementation of the
minimum wage law, we can imagine the
impact and the chain reaction it could have on the market. It could cause
inflation or could even bankrupt a business, or perhaps mass workers retrenchment.
That is why many are worried about
the implementation of the act and I hope that the government can understand
them and come up with guidelines so that the whole thing can be properly
implemented.
More importantly the government need
to set up a fund to help these business as a temporary measure to shoulder
their burden till they can do it on their own. Give them tax breaks or
incentives so that they can have more avenues to choose instead of just
retrenchment or hiking the prices.
I believe with sincere effort on the
part of the government, we can overcome the problems brought about by the implementation of the minimum wage
law.
At the same time I wish to urge the
government to promise also that our daily need items like cooking oil, sugar,
milk powder etc will not go up in prices and that our electricity and fuel
prices will go down.
Chiew Chin Sing.
